Breaking into and succeeding in Academia: Tips from renowned international lawyers and judges!

The event will take place over lunch from 12:45 to 14:00 on Thursday 9 September during the ESIL Annual Conference in Stockholm.

The mentoring event will involve a focused exchange between junior members of the ESIL community and its “patriarchs”- Dr Prof. Iulia Motoc (ECtHR Judge), Dr Prof. Ineta Ziemele (ECJ Judge), Dr Prof. Laurence Burgorgue-Larsen (l’Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne et l’Université de Rouen), Dr Prof. Anne Peters (Director at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law), Dr Mykola Gnatovskyy (President of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment). Early-career academics and graduate students will have the opportunity to register to take part in the event and speak with up to two mentors. The aim is to facilitate the flow of ideas and experience between people at different stages of their lives and careers in international law. Participants will speak one-on-one or in small groups of 2-3 people, for periods of 10-15 minutes about tips for success in academia. This may cover questions about finding and obtaining academic positions, developing research projects, type or frequency of publications, teaching tips, work/life balance, gender issues, and much more.

Places will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis so make sure to secure your place by emailing

Please choose two mentors. The organisers will do their best to assign mentees to mentors on the basis of these preferences.

Registration closes on 3 September.
